Case study: Coney Island Renovation Project
Resilience in the Face of Adversity
Since its founding in 1874, the hospital in New York City has been a beacon of healthcare for South Brooklyn. As a vital part of the NYC Health+ Hospitals network, it serves as a lifeline for the community. However, in 2012, the hospital faced its most formidable challenge yet – the devastating Superstorm Sandy, a hurricane of unparalleled destruction.
Rebuilding Stronger, Rebuilding Safer
In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, the hospital embarked on a journey to rebuild, backed by funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Their mission: to develop a permanent solution that would safeguard against future storms and potential flooding on campus. This marked the inception of a monumental $922 million hospital campus renovation project.
It's been phenomenal. I've been recommending this system to others ever since we implemented it on-site a couple of years ago. The call-out feature on the alarms is great.

Reimagining Healthcare
The cornerstone of this redevelopment effort is the construction of a resilient acute care hospital tower known as the Critical Services Structure (CSS). Located on the north side of the hospital’s campus, this state-of-the-art facility is slated to open its doors in early 2022.
The broader campus renovation, including new parking areas, a permanent flood mitigation structure, and various construction improvements, is on track for completion by 2023. The transformation includes a brand-new Emergency Department, Surgical floor, Radiology/Pharmacy, and a myriad of other facilities designed to revolutionize healthcare delivery.
The Role of WES3 in Protecting Lives and Property
Central to this massive undertaking was the implementation of the WES3 Wireless Evacuation System from Ramtech. The primary objective was to ensure the safety of both property and personnel on-site. The fully wireless WES3 system provided unparalleled flexibility, enabling the relocation of devices as needed throughout the project’s extensive phases. As different areas were completed, the system seamlessly adapted to maintain an emergency evacuation system for everyone on-site.
Project Superintendent, reflecting on the WES3 system’s impact, exclaimed, “It’s been phenomenal. I’ve been recommending this system to others ever since we implemented it on-site a couple of years ago. The call-out feature on the alarms is great.”. In the face of adversity and disaster, this hospital renovation project stands as a testament to resilience and innovation. With the WES3 system at its core, it not only rebuilds structures but reinforces the commitment to safeguarding lives and property in the face of uncertainty.
Conclusion
The Coney Island Hospital Renovation Project stands as a testament to resilience and innovation, with the WES3 Wireless Evacuation System playing a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of all involved.
