HS2 Project Case Study: WES Fire Safety Systems for Align JV
The Align joint venture, comprising Bouygues Travaux Publics, Sir Robert McAlpine, and VolkerFitzpatrick, has established a strong reputation in delivering high-profile infrastructure projects safely and efficiently. In July 2017, Align was awarded the C1 package of the UK High Speed 2 (HS2) line, which includes significant components such as a 3.37km viaduct and a 16.04km twin-bored tunnel. This case study highlights the challenges faced, the innovative solutions implemented, and the successful outcomes achieved in this landmark project.
Challenge
The construction of the HS2 C1 package involved complex infrastructure that required rigorous safety measures. With the scale of the project, maintaining effective communication and ensuring the safety of all personnel in various environments—including main site compounds, satellite sites, and underground tunnels—presented significant challenges.

Solution
To address these challenges, Align implemented the Wireless Emergency System (WES) across multiple sites. The installation included WES units in the main site compound, satellite offices, and cabins, as well as in the tunnels. With over 80 WES3 units installed, including call points and SMP units, the solution ensured comprehensive coverage and reliable emergency communication throughout the project.
Outcome
The deployment of WES3 units greatly enhanced the safety and efficiency of the HS2 C1 package. By providing a robust emergency communication system, Align ensured that all personnel could respond swiftly to any incidents, significantly reducing potential risks. The successful implementation of WES contributed to Align’s reputation for delivering projects on time and on budget while prioritizing safety at every stage of the construction process. As a result, the project continues to progress smoothly, laying the groundwork for the future of high-speed rail travel in the UK.
