In February 2023, Worcester Housing Authority (WHA) in Massachusetts faced a major life safety emergency. A burst pipe during extreme cold caused catastrophic flooding at its 16-storey senior housing building, knocking out the electrical infrastructure, sprinkler network and permanent fire alarm system. With residents forced out of their homes overnight and hotels rapidly filling, WHA urgently needed a solution. Fire alarm contractors advised that full restoration of the permanent system would take four to six months, an unacceptable delay both financially and socially. Instead of waiting, WHA turned to WES3, a wireless temporary fire alarm system engineered for rapid deployment in occupied or partially restored buildings.

Why WES3 Was Approved by the Worcester Fire Department

WES3 provided exactly what was needed: temporary wireless fire protection that could be installed without wiring or power supply. Every device runs on long-life batteries and communicates over a secure radio mesh network.

  • Smoke Sensors in every residential unit
  • Remote pull stations (manual call points) in every hallway
  • Audible and visual evacuation alerts meeting ANSI A10 communication standards
  • Optional off-site alerting via REACT

The straightforward design allowed the team to install and commission each floor in minutes, ensuring full protection long before the permanent system was ready.

We have smoke alarms throughout the entire building… remote pull systems in every hallway. All very good systems to ensure safety.

How WES3 Reduced Costs and Displacement Time

Unlike conventional wired fire alarm systems, WES3 operates as a fully self-contained wireless network. Each unit, whether a detector, call point or sounder,is powered by an internal long-life battery and communicates through a secure radio mesh, automatically routing signals across the network without the need for cabling, drilling or connection to building infrastructure. Devices are addressable and continuously monitored for signal integrity, ensuring immediate transmission of any activation or fault condition to the control base.

This architecture is particularly well suited for environments where the existing fire system is offline or under repair. In Worcester, installing a replacement wired system would have required invasive access to ceilings, risers and electrical pathways that were already damaged by flooding. WES3 was installed without interrupting remedial works and without introducing new dependencies on electrical contractors or materials, both of which were in short supply at the time.

The economic impact was significant. Housing nearly 200 residents across multiple hotels, while providing daily transport and three meals per person, was costing the Authority tens of thousands of dollars per week. By using a temporary wireless solution instead of waiting for a full system rebuild, WHA cut displacement time from several months to just weeks. The cost of deploying WES3 was a fraction of continued hotel expenditure, making the decision not only operationally effective but financially unavoidable.
