WES has been implemented into the new children’s hospital (NCH) , which comprises the main hospital on the shared campus at St James’s and two paediatric Outpatient and Urgent Care Centres—CHI at Connolly, Blanchardstown, and CHI at Tallaght. WES was first introduced to the new children’s hospital (NCH) back in August 2019. A total of 150 units were installed on-site, including call points, smoke detectors, and heat detectors. In June, the hospital experienced a number of arson attacks (up to 15 fires in a single week). On all occasions, the WES units were activated, meaning that 1,500 workers were able to evacuate the site safely, and damage was kept to a minimum. As a result, BAM is looking to increase the number of WES units on-site.

Challenges in Fire Safety for the Northern Line Extension Project

The project faced significant challenges, particularly concerning site security and fire safety due to a series of arson attacks. With up to 15 fires occurring in a single week, there was a serious risk to workers, infrastructure, and overall project timelines.

Ensuring the safety of the 1,500 workers on-site while minimizing damage to the construction site was a major concern. The incidents highlighted the need for a robust fire detection and response system to prevent potential catastrophes.

Built specifically for construction, the system's wireless mesh network allows units to be easily added, moved, and scaled instantly as a project evolves, providing dependable safety coverage from groundworks to completion.

Wireless WES3 Rapid Detection and Scalable Safety

To address these challenges, the WES3 system played a crucial role in ensuring quick detection and safe evacuation during each incident. Its effectiveness has led to plans for increasing the number of WES units on-site, further strengthening fire safety measures.

Additionally, enhanced security protocols, including improved surveillance and stricter access controls, are being considered to prevent future incidents. These proactive steps will help safeguard the project, ensuring construction progresses smoothly with minimal disruption.

The WES3 system provides EN54-25 certified, 24/7 fire protection for dynamic construction environments, ensuring rapid detection and site-wide evacuation alerts without the complexity of traditional wiring.

Saving Lives and Schedules Proven Results

The implementation of WES3 at the new Children’s Hospital in Ireland has significantly enhanced fire safety on-site, proving its effectiveness during multiple arson incidents. The rapid activation of WES3 ensured the safe evacuation of 1,500 workers and minimized structural damage, preventing major project delays.

As a result, BAM is committed to expanding the system’s presence, reinforcing site security and emergency preparedness. These proactive measures will not only safeguard the hospital’s construction but also set a precedent for fire safety standards in large-scale healthcare projects.
