INTRODUCTION
Linear Heat Detection for Challenging Environments
In many industrial and construction environments, fire risk develops along assets such as cable trays, conveyors, and infrastructure, not just at a single point. These areas are often exposed to dust, airflow, moisture, and operational stress, making consistent detection across extended lengths more challenging. Ramtech Linear Heat Detection provides continuous monitoring along the full length of high-risk assets, with coverage of up to 9,800 ft (3,000 m).
Using a fixed temperature heat-sensitive cable, every foot acts as a sensing element, activating when a predefined temperature threshold is reached. The system not only detects heat but can also pinpoint the location of activation along the cable, enabling faster identification of developing fire conditions. When integrated with Ramtech systems, Linear Heat Detection forms part of a connected solution, detecting heat where it develops, triggering site-wide alerting through WES, and notifying key stakeholders via REACT to support a fast and effective response.
FIXED TEMPERATURE DETECTION
Simple. Reliable. Proven.
The system uses a two-core cable with a temperature-sensitive polymer designed to activate at predefined thresholds, typically 155°F (68°C) and 190°F (88°C). depending on the application. For most construction environments, 155°F provides an optimal balance between early detection and minimising false alarms. For higher-risk conditions such as hot works, roofing, or unventilated areas, 190°F is recommended.
- The cable activates
- The circuit condition changes
- An alarm is triggered
- The location of the activation is identified along the cable

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
The Ramtech team are happy to support with any questions to ensure the right solution is specified for your site or project. Below are some of the most common queries.
Linear Heat Detection uses a heat-sensitive cable installed along an asset or area, providing continuous monitoring over lengths of up to 9,800 ft (3,000 m). The cable activates when a predefined temperature is reached, triggering an alarm and identifying the location of the activation along the cable.
It is used in environments where fire risk develops along assets, including cable trays, temporary power distribution, tunnels, and infrastructure. It is particularly effective where traditional point detection is impractical or difficult to maintain.
The system is available in fixed temperature options, typically 155°F and 190°F. The appropriate temperature is selected based on the environment to balance early detection with minimising false alarms.
The system interfaces with the WES wireless fire alarm system, triggering immediate site-wide alerts when activated. When connected to REACT, alarm events are communicated to key stakeholders in real time, supporting rapid response and escalation.
Yes. The cable is designed for demanding environments, with options including stainless steel over-braiding for added durability. It is resistant to dust, moisture, chemicals, UV exposure, and mechanical stress, ensuring reliable performance in challenging conditions.
